Optimising solar energy
Festival organisers are working diligently to make their industry more sustainable. Diesel generators are being used less or even completely replaced by mobile batteries. However, if you think outside the box, a whole world of possibilities opens up. For instance, running an entire festival on 100% solar energy.
The Frisian festival Oerrock wanted to make the 23rd edition of their festival entirely green and sustainable. The festival grounds are located right next to a huge solar park that generates 2.8 MW of solar energy per day. More than enough for the entire festival. But how do you get that energy to the right place? Greener had a bright idea. We provided a sustainable solution, together with equipment rental company Verno Materieelverhuur.
A bright setup
The solar energy went from the solar park straight to the festival grounds through a transformer station. Here, we had two sets of powerful batteries installed.
The front battery was hooked up to the transformer, while the back battery was located on the festival grounds. Through an external energy meter, we could see exactly how much energy each battery needed to be as full as possible at all times. One set charged during the day while the other set powered the main stage, the field, the catering, and other facilities with a sunny dose of energy.
When the sun sets and the solar park no longer generates energy, the second set of our batteries comes into play. They’ve been charging all day and are now ready to provide the Oerrock attendees with music, a light show, and fresh chips throughout the evening.
