Grid congestion at the EV charging hub
TotalEnergies is one of the largest energy companies in the world, with around 400 service stations in the Netherlands. Their service stations not only provide motor fuels, but also clean, electric energy to entire fleets of electric cars and e-trucks. They wanted to build a charging hub at their Sevenum service station, with the aim of accommodating the charging needs of e-trucks on the road. This charging hub is part of Rijkswaterstaat’s Living Lab Heavy Duty Charging Hubs project. The 80 amps grid connection on site isn’t strong enough to run both the service station itself and the charging hub. Fortunately, Greener found a suitable solution.
A combination of batteries, a fast charger, solar panels, and smart software
In order to fast charge e-trucks, you need chargers with a power of at least 300 kW. But an average grid connection can’t support a powerful charger like that. However, thanks to our smart software we were able to expand the power capacity by combining the available grid connection with our batteries and an array of solar panels.
By utilizing peak shaving, TotalEnergies is able to count on additional energy from our batteries and the solar panels during peak hours. When our batteries aren’t needed during off-peak hours, they recharge, ready for the next peak. This way, we provide a solution for grid congestion, while also providing a full charge to the e-trucks. This allows TotalEnergies to operate their charging station at full capacity. What was the secret to this successful collaboration? Thanks to our large inventory of batteries, we could get the project started almost immediately. And with the convenience and flexibility of our in-house developed EMS system, the necessary data could easily be collected. This way, TotalEnergies could meet the requirements of both Rijkswaterstaat and the ‘Living Labs’ project aimed at gaining knowledge and experience in the Netherlands and sharing it with market parties. Last but not least, TotalEnergies could count on the service of our development team who are ready to help and respond at any time. In short, a truly energizing collaboration.
