Temporary grid reinforcement during expansion

Imagine you’re a business owner looking to expand, or an energy consultant assisting in that expansion. No matter your role, there’s one thing you’re going to need: electricity. But everyone needs it, often at the same time, leading to grid congestion. How to solve this?

In this blog, we’ll explore two examples where Greener provided temporary extra power so businesses could proceed despite suffering a grid delay. One case where we helped a supermarket and one where we helped out a restaurant.

Example 1 – Enerzien and the new supermarket branch

Just weeks before the opening, news came in that the grid reinforcement would take another three months.

Jumbo is one of the Netherlands’ biggest supermarket chains. For the construction of a new Jumbo branch, the supermarket chain enlisted the expertise of energy consultancy firm Enerzien. They developed the energy plan and requested a grid reinforcement for the site. Just weeks before the opening, news came in that the grid reinforcement would take another three months. The existing 3x160A grid connection wasn’t nearly powerful enough to power the entire supermarket. What now? You call Greener.

Together with Enerzien, we conducted various analyses. It became apparent that a peak shaving battery was the right solution. We connected the battery to the grid connection, letting it charge overnight and supply extra power during peak hours. Additionally, the client gained insight into their exact energy usage through our Energy Management System.

Enerzien provided Jumbo with the most cost-effective and sustainable all-encompassing solution, allowing the supermarket to open as scheduled.

Example 2 – Grid delay for restaurant in Amsterdam business district

A significant grid delay would mean going over budget as well as losing potential revenue.

Wurst & Schnitzelhaus wanted to open a new location in the heart of Zuidas, the Amsterdam business district, but were looking at a significant grid delay. It looked like the restaurant wouldn’t be able to open on time. This would mean going over budget as well as losing potential revenue. Fortunately, they reached out to Greener.

After one phone call, we arrived on site with a battery. We connected the battery to the grid to peak shave and provide extra power as needed. This allowed the restaurant to operate fully without worrying about a lack of power. A few months later, the grid reinforcement was completed, and we collected the battery.

“Opening a new establishment is always an exciting time for us. The use of the battery was new for us, but luckily it went really smoothly.”

Daniëlle Weeling, Manager Wurst & Schnitzelhaus

In summary, a grid reinforcement is a permanent solution, but it often takes months to implement. In the meantime, Greener can provide a temporary, reliable, and sustainable power solution. This way, your business, or your client’s can continue without interruption.
